Dental Exam

A smiling female patient interacting with her dentist, who is holding a tablet to explain her dental examination results.Dental exams are an important aspect of good dental hygiene, but few people are aware of why they are so important and how they can help them. Regular dental visits can have a profound effect on a patient's future dental health. In the dental office of Infinity Dental Care, we always encourage parents to have their children examined as early as one to two years of age in order to lay a solid foundation. The dentist recommends that patients of all ages schedule bi-annual dental appointments to stay informed about evolving dental issues.

Regular Dental Exams

Patients will be guided through a predictable process during their regular dental examinations. Examinations tend to focus on dental hygiene and prevention. This is done to prevent dental problems from developing.

Questions and Answers

An ordinary dental exam follows a few predictable steps. Dentists and dental assistants perform a dental checkup. During a teeth cleaning, a dental hygienist will be present. You will be asked to fill out a medical history form. You will be asked about your current medications, herbal supplements, allergies, and use of drugs and alcohol. You will also be asked about any medical conditions you're suffering from and the treatments you're receiving. Discuss any previous dental treatments you have had, including surgeries and anesthesia experiences. During the checkup, the dentist will use this information to develop a treatment plan.

Investigation

After that, the dentist will examine the patient's gums, teeth, jaw, tongue, and supporting structures. This includes x-rays and a visual examination of the mouth. X-rays can uncover abnormalities and underlying issues not visible during an examination. Many patients get full-mouth x-rays, but they are not always needed, especially if they have good dental hygiene and regular dental checkups.

Cleaning

Many regular dental check-ups include dental cleanings as well. In a cleaning, tartar buildup is removed from the teeth and under the gum line. The hygienist will polish the teeth after the tartar is removed and will educate the patient on how to brush and floss to prevent future dental problems.

Examination

Afterward, the dentist will perform another visual examination to check for common dental abnormalities. A cancer screening is included in this exam to anticipate future dental problems. Cancers of the mouth can appear in different ways. Early detection may make a big difference in the patient's outcome, so we regard this part of the exam as vital and very serious. Our dentists can diagnose oral cancer and treat it. The oral cancer screening takes only a few minutes, but it can be lifesaving.

Depending on your gums and teeth, you might need more frequent dental check-ups. Be sure to brush and floss regularly at home and visit the dentist bi-annually, or as directed.
