Dental Implants

The primary function of implants is to prevent jawbone deterioration, to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of place, to hold the restorations in place securely, and to create a natural appearance. Furthermore, dental implants can be used to replace one tooth, multiple teeth, or even all of your teeth in your mouth if you are missing any. In fact, dental implants can be used to hold all sorts of restorations in place. At our Infinity Dental Care practice, dental implants can be used to attach a denture, bridge, or crown.

What Are Dental Implants?

There are various types of dental implants, which consist of titanium posts that are topped with dental crowns. After the initial placement of the post, it is allowed to fuse with the surrounding tissue in the jawbone, a process called osseointegration. An abutment is a small metal device that can be used to attach the dental implant to the patient's jawbone once the dental implant has become integrated into the jawbone. After the implant is placed, it is complete, and once the area of the mouth has been properly healed, you will be ready to reveal you new smile. There are many benefits to considering dental implants over bridges since they can prevent the possibility of adjacent teeth being damaged, which can protect the jawbone as well. Dental implants can restore multiple teeth, or just one tooth, which can be viewed as an advantage over bridges. Dental implants are ideal for patients who want to protect the teeth surrounding the missing tooth by getting a replacement that matches their surrounding natural teeth.

Dental Implant Procedure

It is possible to replace a tooth within the same day if the gum and bone are in good health. In the most challenging dental implant cases, the bone must be solid enough to support the implant, or there simply isn't enough bone to support it. The condition occurs more frequently in the upper part of the jaw, under the sinuses. It may be necessary to do a bone graft in these situations. Depending on whether bone grafting is required, your procedure for dental implants could take several months. It is possible to replace a damaged or decayed tooth within the same day that it is extracted if the gum is without damage following the extraction. If the tooth is decayed or broken and needs to be extracted, then the replacement tooth may be installed on the same day as it is extracted. A temporary crown will be placed which can be replaced with a permanent crown months after the bone fusion.
