Direct inlays are applied in a single appointment, fitting over the existing tooth structure without the need for extensive preparation. Indirect inlays, on the other hand, are custom-made in a dental lab and then attached to the tooth, typically requiring a temporary inlay while the permanent one is being crafted. Compared to traditional fillings, inlays provide a more precise fit and greater durability. Their etched surfaces also improve adhesion with dental cement or adhesive, ensuring a strong and long-lasting restoration. What Are Onlays?Onlays are similar to inlays but cover a larger portion of the tooth, including one or more cusps. They are often recommended when tooth decay or damage extends beyond what an inlay can repair but does not yet require a full dental crown. Onlays serve as an excellent alternative to crowns because they preserve more of the natural tooth structure while providing strength and protection. The process for placing an onlay is similar to that of an inlay. A temporary onlay may be placed while the permanent restoration is being fabricated in a dental lab. Onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns due to the level of coverage they provide. Inlays vs. OnlaysThe primary difference between inlays and onlays is the amount of tooth surface they cover. Inlays are smaller, fitting within the cusps of the tooth, while onlays extend over one or more cusps, covering a larger portion of the tooth structure. Because of their broader coverage, onlays are sometimes more complex to place than inlays. However, dentists often prefer onlays over crowns because they are less invasive and help retain more of the natural tooth. While some dentists may find onlays more challenging to place than crowns, they generally provide a strong and protective restoration with minimal tooth reduction. Inlays, although similar to fillings, offer a longer-lasting and more durable solution. They cover a larger area than traditional fillings and help strengthen the tooth rather than weaken it. Fillings, in contrast, can sometimes expand and contract, potentially leading to further damage over time.
